Coaching Cycles Reimagined: Question, Collect, Build, Reflect
Strand 1: Question
As mathematics education leaders, we ask questions. Questions help us:
- Learn about our students’ homes, communities, and cultures
- Learn about our coworkers’ communities and cultures and how they inform their practices
- Center equity and evidence-based practices in the educational systems and structures we navigate
- Prioritize our time
Strand 2: Collect
As mathematics education leaders, we collect. Collections include:
- Coaching resources and plans that support us in enacting deep professional learning experiences alongside teachers
- Data to promote strength-based conversations with and among teachers and students
- Evidence-based instructional strategies including lesson plans, games, and other intentional learning experiences for students
Strand 3: Build
As mathematics education leaders, we build knowledge, resources, and school culture, to encourage:
- Equitable and humanized mathematics experiences for students
- Rich mathematical communities that evidence connections to students’ lives and cultures
- Teacher learning and experiences that promote the VDOE’s focus on the data cycle
- Invaluable learning experiences to promote deep understanding of 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning for teachers
Strand 4: Reflect
As mathematics education leaders, we constantly reflect as we:
- Network to collectively engage in the work of leading mathematics
- Come alongside teachers to evaluate what is working and what can be improved through a coaching partnership or team
- Engage with coworkers to reflect on our own biases and beliefs
- Engage students in reflecting on their own work as mathematicians
